Teacher's slaps causes hearing loss

  • High School News

Time and again their has been cases of teachers beating students or pupils and some even dying as a result. Recently a court in Meru heard that a 16-year-old girl suffered from hearing loss in one ear after she was beaten up by her teacher.

The Form Two student Kaaga Girls High School said the teacher, Mr Wycliffe King’ori, attacked her over claims she was a lesbian. The teacheri allegedly committed the offence on March 23 last year.

“The teacher summoned me at 9:30pm after evening preps and asked me why I was practising lesbianism. I told him the rumours were being spread by students who had bad blood with me and that I was not a lesbian as alleged,” the minor told court.

Three days later, she said, she approached the teacher and demanded to know why she was being branded as a lesbian.

“I requested to speak to Mr King’ori about the issue but instead, he unleashed heavy slaps on my left cheek thrice, dragged me and ordered me to kneel down outside the principal’s office. By then my left ear was in severe pain,” she said.

The school later expelled her over claims she is a lesbian.

The student reported the matter to Meru Police Station and was issued with a P3 form.

She later sought treatment at the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital. She said she was referred to the Kaaga School for the deaf for screening. The girl was later admitted to Njia Special School in Igembe after she was diagnosed with hearing problems.

“I was assessed and told I have developed a hearing loss because my ear drum was torn -it has some holes in it,” she told the court.

She said, however, she is regaining her hearing after undergoing a surgery at Consolata Mission Hospital, Nkubu in January this year.

Prosecution Counsel Moses Waliaula presented the P3 form and a medical report from doctors indicating the extent of the injury as exhibits in court. Hearing continues on June 15.
