Nyahururu - A team of armed police officers have been deployed in Laikipia University main campus to help maintain security in the campus.
Nyahururu Deputy County commissioner, Kiplagat Tarus who is also the Chairman of the sub-County Security Committee, has assured the students of maximum security while in campus.
Tarus was speaking during a security sensitization meeting at the University's main campus where he led a team of security agents in enlightening the students and members of the university community on how to tackle security threats.
“In case of a security scare, wake up and move out slowly observing all directions,” said Nyahururu sub-County AP commander, Daniel Masaba who was also present during the meeting.
Masaba urged private hostels owners to vet security guards thoroughly to ensure they conform to security standards before employing them.
Nyandarua North OCPD, Benjamin Onsongo said there is a possibility of establishing a police post within the university premises to enhance security response. He urged students to be on the lookout for any suspicious characters in and outside campus, to ensure their security.
The sensitization comes weeks after the Garissa University terror attack that left 148 people dead, and a stampede at the University of Nairobi's Kikuyu campus that injured scores of students in a false security scare.
Laikipia university vice chancellor, Prof Francis Lelo promised to conduct a total audit of all hostels and buildings in the school to ensure they meet minimum safety standards which include availability of an emergency exit, fire extinguishers and increased security guards.
He also cautioned the students against circulating alarming text messages.
