Missing School Girls Resurface

Five of the six girls from Stephjoy Girls High School in Kiambu County who had been reported missing since Monday last week have resurfaced.

The students, whose whereabouts in the last week still remain unclear, arrived at the Royal Media Services offices where they are currently waiting for their families to pick them up.

“You can’t complain about anything in the school (StephJoy High School)… it is worse than a rehabilitation centre. We couldn’t go home because we knew our parents would just send us back to the school,” one of them told Citizen TV.

They decided to get in touch with the television station after it aired a story that their parents were looking for them.

The new development comes hours after the school management gave a notice of closure over reported cases of unrest at the school.

The management took the decision to close the school indefinitely after one dormitory, which accommodates 90 students, was reportedly torched in a Sunday morning incident.

It is alleged that some students used potassium permanganate to set mattresses ablaze with the fire spreading to consume the entire dormitory located on the second floor of the building.

The school administration has explained that the incident was occasioned by anxiety that has resulted from impending end term examinations, which were scheduled for Monday.

So far 11 students are said to have been suspended over cases of indiscipline.
