KMTC College shut for fear of terrorist attack
- College News
A second institution of higher learning in the northeastern part of the country has been closed indefinitely after the government allegedly failed to provide armed security for the institution.
The Kenya Medical Training College Garissa Campus was shut down Saturday.
College principal Omar Osman said they closed the college after the Garissa County Commissioner said the government had no security personnel to deploy to the institution that housed 250 students.
“We were told the government has no such arrangements,” he said.
On 2nd April the Garissa University College was attacked which resultred to the death of 147 people most of whom were students of the institution. This brought up the issue of security on institutions of higher learning in the country among other places. Weeks after its indefinate closure, another institutions still in Garissa was closed down due to terrorism threats.
The heads of the college said they could not risk the lives of the students after Al-Shabaab killed 148 people at nearby Garissa University College on April 2.The college was closed after consultation with KMTC bosses in Nairobi, the principal said.
Mr Osman said the affected students would be transferred to other KMTC campuses in Kapenguria, Kabarnet, Thika, Murang’a and Kitui to continue with their studies.
But students in enrolled community nursing are likely to face challenges because the course is only offered at the Kapenguria Campus. Mr Osman said academic and non-academic staff would await further instructions.
It is high time the governments did something to put the minds of kenyans to rest but undertaking more stringet measures on security and safty matters throughout the country. This would at least be done by involving the public and taking any information serioyusly that is brought forward no matter how trivial it seems.
As they say, time will tell if any change will be made or not.
