High School Closed Over Ethnic Tension

A secondary school in Bomet County has been closed indefinitely due to ethnic tension among students. The tension is said to have been caused by students from two different tribes.

Kyogong Secondary School sent the learners home on Monday, July 20, 2015 after the students from the Maasai and Kalenjin communities started fighting.

“The Maasais started throwing stones towards their schoolmates, the Kalenjins retaliated but were overpowered and forced to run away,” one of the students told NTV.

The Maasais are said to be angry that teachers favor students from the other community, allegations which the Kalenjins refuted.

Students in the mixed boys and girls school also claimed that the school’s management encouraged ethnic divisions as they even sleep in separate sides of the dormitory.

Chapalungu officer in charge of education and the school’s principal refused to talk to the media.

Only time will tell if a viable solution will be found so that the students from the two tribes come together and co-exist peacefully after the school is reopened.
