A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR SOMALI REFUGEES
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MKU and CfBT Education Trust to facilitate training of 26 refugees from the world’s largest refugee camp
.Twenty-six Somalia refugees from the Dadaab Refugee camp will undergo training in Project Management, Public Relations and Diplomacy at Mount Kenya University.
This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the university and the CfBT Education Trust, an education charity headquartered in the UK.
The MoU, which was signed yesterday at Thika Main Campus, will support the Somalia Wide Education Synergies project. The project is a EU -funded scholarship scheme implemented by CfBT. It targets secondary school graduates access to higher education for their individual growth and for positive contribution to the society.
The 26 students will undertake Diploma and Certificate courses. “CfBT and MKU shall establish a mechanism for reporting on the progress of the Project,” says the MoU.
The colorful event at Main Campus was graced by CfBT Trust Regional Director for Africa Kate Vorly, Sussane Martin, Head of Section-European Union and Somalia Ambassador to Kenya H.E Mohammed Ali Nur. MKU Vice Chancellor Prof. Stanley Waudo, who signed the MoU on behalf of the university, said the initiative by CfBT and the European Union, was a positive step towards enabling people living in refugee camps transform their lives positively through education. “The impact of this initiative will resonate throughout the whole community,” said Prof. Waudo. “The secret to solving most of Africa’s problems lies in quality education.”
Dadaab, located in Northern Kenya, approximately 100kms from the Somalia boarder is the world’s largest refugee camp. It is believed to hold up to 300,000 refugees, mainly from Somalia.
